Jour 377: Survey article response

I agree that citizens should have the right to government information. "If ordinary citizens are becoming more aware of their access rights, and more assertive regarding them, it is indeed a reason to be gratified" says Kenneth Bunting. Though lack of media resources and a decline of newsroom aggressiveness is an issue; the two studys/surveys of the MLRC and NFOIC find the positive aspects in government transparency and its usefulness in journalism.
Sandra Baron, exec. director of the MLRC says; "While a professional objective of journalism is to keep government as open and tranparent and accountable as possible, a public that also demands open and transparent government is hugely important." Both surveys saw positive changes in their numbers as open government increased awareness, interest in transparency, increase citizen activism, and most importantly, increased assertiveness.
Also, through the use of FOI hotlines, citizens are provided with information, legal assistance, and advice from FOI. NFOIC, MLRC & Knight Foundation provide the public with political and governmental information; and most importantly-promote quality journalism
